How does OCR image recognition technology work? When scanned, faxed or emailed purchase orders, invoices, reminders, account statements and payments are processed via an OCR software program; the OCR engine translates image text and bar codes, making them available for content analysis.

Types of Recognition Technologies

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
OCR is the process of extracting words (and possibly layout and formatting information) from image files such as faxes and PDFs attached to emails, and converting them to text. After an image has been scanned into a computer, OCR software translates text images into real text that the computer can read. OCR works best on typed text, either in cases when an original printout has been missing or in scanning printed or typewritten sheets.  

Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)
In the OMR process, an optical mark reader detects marks on a scanned form. OMR software is a computer software application that utilizes an image scanner to process surveys, attendance sheets, tests, checklists and other printed forms. OMR software is a highly reliable and dedicated technique for reading and scanning data accurately. 

Bar Code Recognition
A bar code represents characters by sets of parallel bars of varying thickness and separation that are read optically by transverse scanning. Bar code recognition software automatically detects and decodes popular types of bar codes in any direction on scanned documents. The software captures product and customer data, saving the details to your computer.

Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR)
Do you need to convert handwriting to text? ICR is the computer translation of hand-printed and handwritten characters. ICR software is sometimes used in conjunction with OCR software during form processing. However, while OCR software can read unstructured machine-printed text of good quality, ICR software has strict design requirements. ICR software performs image analysis to accurately align the image, match ICR zones with predictable data fields, and begin categorizing the data as typed characters, hand print or other data types. ICR software allows you to attain an automatic document flow, which considerably enhances your efficiency.

Double Voting
Double voting technology enables the parallel use of OCR engine plus a voting system. Alternatively, either one of the OCR engines may be individually applied on a field level basis to increase recognition accuracy.

Multi-Threading for Multi-Processor Architecture
